west elm Debuts on Broadway

Free Delivery and Special Savings Offered on Furniture Opening Day

2/26/09 10:15 PST

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Home furnishings style-setter west elm announced today the March 4, 2009 opening of its newest location at 1870 Broadway in New York City. The 24,000+ square foot store will house the brand’s complete assortment, as well as onsite inventory, making it possible for shoppers to bring home new looks immediately or arrange quick-turnaround delivery. On opening day, west elm will offer free delivery of furniture in the New York City area.*

The west elm aesthetic is modern with strong global and natural influences. The brand offers furniture and accessories for every room of the home, all at accessible prices. The new store at 62nd and Broadway is uniquely arranged with loft spaces designed to show complementary rooms of the home together. These fully-furnished spaces provide inspiration and enable customers to visualize the same look in their own apartments or homes. Customers will also be able to do side-by-side comparisons at floor-to-ceiling walls of chairs, tables, and headboards.

“At west elm we offer good design, at great prices,” said Dave DeMattei, group president Williams-Sonoma, Williams-Sonoma Home & west elm brands. “These days, this combination has become even more important to us, and to our customers.”

To celebrate the opening, west elm has partnered with designer David Stark to create one-of-a-kind sculptural objects made from recycled west elm packing materials. These pieces, which Stark refers to as “somewhere between art and housewares” or “packaging, re-packaged,” will be auctioned off to benefit Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum at a private event prior to the opening. They will remain on display at the store throughout the month of March.

“We’ve made a commitment at Williams-Sonoma, Inc., and specifically at west elm, to reduce the impact we make on the environment,” continued DeMattei. “Our partnership with David Stark represents this, as we reuse and repurpose materials that would otherwise be waste to create incredible pieces to benefit Cooper-Hewitt.”

“We're absolutely thrilled to collaborate with west elm on this purposeful and incredibly fun project,” said David Stark, president and creative director, David Stark Design & Production. “We have long worked to make our events as thoughtful and responsible as possible. As sustainability becomes less of a buzzword and more of a widespread reality, we are proud to be branching out into innovative, practical design on an everyday scale.”

West elm creates new looks each season with color palettes and inspired designs to update the home throughout the year. West elm at 62nd and Broadway will open with the Spring 2009 Collection which includes a palette of rich, spice-market inspired colors; an eco-collection of recycled glassware, organic textiles, and fair trade Khadi textiles hand loomed by artisans in India; as well as the expanded collection of Lutz & Patmos for west elm throws and pillows.

In addition, customers can sign up for the west elm credit card at the new store. Currently, west elm is offering no payments and no interest for 12 months on purchases of $1,000 or more on the west elm card. For every $250 spent, card holders earn 25 design dollars good for future purchases at west elm.

The store will be open Monday – Saturday 11-8 and Sunday 12-7 . The store phone number is 212.247.8077. West elm offers a discount to qualified design professionals.
