West Elm LOCAL Program to Showcase 11 Local Artists and Makers
West
Elm, the Brooklyn-based home furnishings retailer, announced today
its Hoboken store will open Thursday, October 19 at 10 a.m. at 1420
Willow Avenue. The 10,745 sq. ft. store will bring approximately 30 jobs
to the Hoboken area. With a commitment to building community, West Elm
will sell an assortment of local products from 11 New Jersey-based
makers and designers alongside the store’s holiday assortment of home
furnishings and decor. West Elm will also offer Williams-Sonoma, Inc.’s
cross-brand design consultation program Design
Crew, which pairs customers with experts who can provide design,
installation and registry services.
“Hoboken’s burgeoning waterfront and proximity to New York City has
established it as a community with an appetite for unique cultural
experiences, entertainment and specialty retail,” said West Elm
president Alex Bellos. “We hope to contribute to the neighborhood’s
continued growth and create opportunities for residents and visitors to
connect and share their common interests, whether it’s at our in-store
workshops and community-driven events or by discovering a New
Jersey-based artist from the LOCAL Hoboken assortment.”
A selection of locally made products by 11 makers and artisans based in
New Jersey will be a part of the West Elm Hoboken LOCAL
assortment including:
The surrounding area of each West Elm location is reflected within
elements of the store’s interior design. A hand painted map of Hoboken
and New York hangs behind the cash register at West Elm Hoboken,
representing the connection between the two cities. The register’s front
panel features a sculptural installation made of reclaimed spindles
sourced from regional brownstones in reference to the 19th-century homes
that line Hoboken’s streets. In the store’s loft area is an accent floor
set in a basket weave pattern made using mixed American hardwoods
sourced from barns that once dotted the country’s farmlands. To
complement the flooring, the loft’s ceiling is made of bleached
reclaimed oak assembled in a similar pattern.
West Elm will host a pre-opening celebration for the community on
Wednesday, October 18 from 6 - 8 p.m. Hoboken residents are invited to
enter the West Elm sweepstakes*,
offering local customers a chance to win a $2,000 gift card and an
invitation to Wednesday’s private, pre-opening celebration. A portion of
the pre-opening proceeds will benefit Sustainable
Jersey, a local nonprofit that provides tools, training and
financial incentives to support communities as they pursue
sustainability programs. To celebrate the opening of West Elm Hoboken on
Thursday, October 19, West Elm will partner with Hoboken-based artist Coco
& Blu to design a limited edition tote bag presented to the
first 300 shoppers with a $50 minimum purchase.
