Retailer Showcases Selection of New Jersey Makers and Artisans

Elm announced today the opening of its new location at 343
Springfield Avenue in Downtown Summit, designated in the National
Register of Historic Places for its architecturally significant
buildings. The 15,347 square-foot retail location opens on Thursday,
November 3 at 10 a.m., bringing approximately 30 jobs to the
neighborhood. As part of West Elm’s LOCAL
program, 10 New Jersey-based makers and designers will sell their
products with the store’s holiday assortment of modern furnishings and
décor. A design lab offering West Elm Style + Services will support
customers in their journey to express their personal style at home.
“Springfield Avenue has served as Downtown Summit’s commercial
thoroughfare for over a century,” said West Elm president Jim Brett. “We
are proud to join this mix of local businesses designed to serve the
community, as well as to connect Summit residents to New Jersey-based
artists.”
To honor New Jersey’s history of manufacturing, the West Elm Summit
store’s cash wrap is made of reclaimed subway tile, originally
manufactured in Trenton, NJ and configured in a herringbone pattern,
while the loft floor centerpiece is fashioned from salvaged slate
roofing tiles sourced throughout the Northeast.
To celebrate the opening, West Elm partnered with New Jersey-based
artist Ice
Cream Social Shoppe to design a limited edition tote bag that will
be presented to the first 300 shoppers with a $50 minimum purchase on
opening day. Additional store opening activities will include a
sweepstakes* offering local customers a chance to win a $2,000 gift card
and an invitation to a private pre-opening celebration on Wednesday,
November 2 from 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. A portion of the pre-opening celebration
proceeds will benefit Visual
Arts Center of New Jersey, a local non-profit that provides more
than 30,000 individuals a year with visual learning, interpretive
programs, and art-making experiences with the mission of bringing art
and people together.
