New Store Will Feature Product from Six Calgary-based Makers and Artists

Brooklyn, NY-based home furnishings retailer West
Elm will open its first store in Calgary, Alberta at
Mount Royal Village on Thursday, August 20, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. The
9,000-square-foot store will open with West Elm’s fall assortment
including Fair Trade Certified, handcrafted and local products
accompanied by a suite of complimentary design services. Crafted
goods from six Calgary-based artists and makers will be featured
as part of West Elm’s LOCAL
initiative. This will be the fourth West Elm location in Canada
and will create approximately 30 new jobs.

To commemorate the opening, West Elm has partnered with Green
Calgary to co-host a pre-opening celebration on
Wednesday, August 19 from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. A portion of the
night’s proceeds will benefit Green Calgary, a leading
environmental charity that supports the people of Calgary in
living a more sustainable life. On opening day, Thursday, August
20, the first 300 shoppers with a $50 minimum purchase will be
gifted an exclusive tote bag designed by Calgary-based
illustrator, Alison Hui of The
Paper Lover Co.

mindfully sourced materials, including reclaimed oak skin planks
arranged in a chevron design for the floor and salvaged tin tiles
that have been sand blasted to show the original tin’s patina for
the ceiling. The front checkout area incorporates a combination of
doorknobs and steel on a rectilinear design in salvaged lathe
slats.
